From the Books:
I rummaged through the dusty library in my dead parents’ house.
“It’s gotta be here somewhere…hmmm…”
One by one, I took books from the shelf and flipped through them. They were just normal texts on subjects as mundane as gardening or interior decorating. One of them felt a little heavier than the others: “How to Be the Guardian of Your House.”
I examined it and spotted a small flap on the back cover. The flap was emblazoned with the seiman, the pentagram symbol of Abe no Seimei, my legendary spell-slinging ancestor who was basically the “Merlin” of Japan.
I gently lifted it.
Peeking out from underneath the flap was a tattered journal. Its paper had yellowed with age. The cover and each page were littered with ancient kanji characters, all written by hand with a calligraphy pen.
“This is it,” I said, eyeing it with wonder. “The original ‘Senji Ryakketsu.’ The encyclopedia that Seimei wrote about all things related to exorcisms and monsters.”
“Heya,” a girl’s voice said, startling me and making me drop the book.
“Geez. Give me a heart attack, why don’t you?”
“Sorry.” The visitor—a cute girl my age with snow-white fox ears and a tail of the same shade—approached me. “I just wanna make sure…you’re an Onmyōji, right? An exorcist, and member of the Tsuchimikado Clan and descendant of Abe no Seimei?”
“I am. You saw me use my powers, didn’t you?”
She nodded. “Just checking. And the two that died were your parents, who were also Onmyōji, yeah?”
I scowled. The scars of their loss were still fresh within my heart. “Yeah. What of it?”
Her bubbly smile faded. She knelt before me. “My name’s Tsukiha Yagiri. I’m one of the 12 Guardians.”
“Guardians? What are you talking about?”
“I’ll explain that later. But I need your help.”
“With what? Can’t you see I’m busy here? I’m gonna need to prepare for Mom and Pop’s funerals and—”
“I know.” She raised her head. “Listen, I’m sorry to spring this on you so suddenly after losin’ your parents and all, but…”
Her expression was dire. “When you’re done here, I need you to go on a journey with me to seal the Primordial dragon-serpent Orochi. He’s coming.”
“Orochi? As in the eight-headed monster from Japanese fairy tales?”
“I can assure you…he’s no fairy tale. He’s very real. And if we don’t act soon, the seal he’s been placed in will soon break.”
I shrugged. “Okay, well…what do you want me to do about it? I just lost my parents and most of my hometown, and I’m still exhausted from—”
The ground trembled beneath our feet. Cracks formed in the wooden ceiling.
“An earthquake?” I wondered.
“No, she said, pointing at the doorway. “We’ve got company.”
